The History of Couto S.A.

The history of Couto S.A. began in 1918 in Porto, Portugal when Alberto Ferreira do Couto and his business partner founded the company Flôres e Couto, starting a manufacturing production of combs, brushes, and toothbrushes using local materials and craftsmanship to provide quality products at an affordable cost.

Thanks to their success in sales, Couto soon had the opportunity to establish their own small research laboratory and focus on developing new products. In 1931, with Alberto as the sole proprietor of the now Couto Lda, he collaborated with a dentist friend to develop a medicinal toothpaste, which culminated in 1932 when they introduced their famous toothpaste, "Pasta Medicinal Couto," to the market. Over the following years, this product became an iconic international success and a source of pride for Portugal.

Today, the Couto family continues to lead the company, with Alberto Gomes da Silva, the founder's nephew, taking the reins after his passing in 1974.

In 2004, under the name Couto S.A., the company moved from its old location in Largo de São Domingos in Porto to the industrial complex of Utic in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Utilizing a modern laboratory while remaining true to tradition and the original recipe, the toothpaste continues to be semi-artisanally produced without the use of animal ingredients, always with a focus on ensuring the best quality through rigorous quality control.
